10. Randy de Puniet


When de Puniet started his career with the Honda RS125R, he became the French champion in 1998, even before he began his journey in MotoGP in 2006. In 2001, he has moved a level higher in the 250cc World Championship with the Aprilia RSV250 until he ended his career season finishing eighth on his fifth year with the Aprilia. He later expanded his vision for the MotoGP where he joined the Kawasaki Racing Team in 2006, Team LCR in 2008, and will continue his race with Pramac Racing riding the Ducati Desmosedici GP11.


9. Marco Simoncelli


It could be sad that he just passed away on 23 October because of the accident in the Malaysian Grand Prix on the Sepang International Circuit. However, Marco Simoncelli has been hailed as one of the best in his group who competed in the Road Racing World Championship for 10 years from 2002 until the moment he left. One of his most noted feats is when he won first place under 250cc with the Gilera RSA 250 while racing for Metis Gilera in 2008.


8. Nicky Hayden

The Kentucky Kid Nicky Hayden started his MotoGP career in 2003, racing for the Honda-HRC with his Honda RC211V, which gave him the world championship in 2006. This success was rooted back with the family that has been in motorsports, even having the same racing number, 69, as his father had in the old days.


7. Ben Spies


With a unique riding style, even noticed with the elbows protruding outward, Ben Spies, who is also known as “Elbowz”, is a racer that began his career in professional motorcycling in the dawn of the new millennium. He was burning in the AMA Superbike series where he drove his Suzuki GSXR-1000 in winning the race in 2006, kept his title twice in 2007, once in 2008, and kept it again in World Superbike in 2009.


6. Andrea Dovizioso


Italians are known to have the passion for speed, which makes sense why Andrea Dovizioso is also in the pursuit of winning in the MotoGP. He started the career in 15 September 2007 when he mentioned that he would be stepping up for the higher class, including his old team. He has been consistent in placing fourth and fifth in most races, which made him a credible racer.


5. Michael Doohan


Michael “Mick” Doohan is a professional Australian racer that has been a Grand Prix motorcycle road racing World Champion taking the first rank for five consecutive years from 1994 to 1998, driving a 500cc NSR500 under team Repsol Honda.


4. Casey Stoner


Being named as Australian of the Year can be amazing, especially if you are as young as you can be. Casey Stoner, who was born in 1985, had done so much in winning the MotoGP World Champion in 2007 and his second world championship in 2011, under Ducati Corse and Repsol Honda, respectively. His Ducati GP7 and the Honda RC212V had done wonders for him.


3. Dani Pedrosa


Even though he was too small for his size, only standing at 5 feet, 2 inches tall, and weighing only 112.4 lbs, Daniel “Dani” Pedrosa Ramal, who was born in September 29, 1985, is a world champion in the 250cc Grands Prix, even being the youngest to win the prestigious title. He is more than meets the eye, even being world champion for two consecutive years in 2004 and 2005, while driving his Honda RSW250.

Currently a rider for the Yamaha Factory Team, Jorge Lorenzo Guerrero has achieved his fulfillment of being a motorcycle racer when he became the 250cc World Champion in 2006 and 2007 with the Aprilia RSW 250, also being the MotoGP World Champion in 2010 thanks to the Yamaha YZR-M1.

Tips on Halloween safety

Halloween is fast approaching, and young trick-or-treaters are often so exited by the fun that they forget to follow regular safety rules. Here are a few tips courtesy of the RCMP, and Winnipeg police and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service to help keep youngsters safe.

Children

• Never trick-or-treat alone. Always walk with an adult or a group of friends.
• Make sure you can be seen. Wear reflective, bright colour costumes, or fasten reflective tape to your costume or bag.
• Avoid masks that restrict your vision.
• Only visit well-lit houses.
• Don’t go into the house for your treats, always wait outside.
• Don’t eat any treats until an adult has inspected them.
• Carry a flashlight so you can see where you are going.
• Don’t crisscross the street or run out from between parked cars. Always go down one side of the street, cross at the corner, and then the other side.
• Watch out for cars pulling out of driveways and backing up.
• Watch out for open flames from jack-o-lanterns and displays.
• Don’t trample through gardens or bushes. Always use pathways and sidewalks.
   

Motorists

• Halloween means there will be children on the streets. Drivers need to use extra caution. With the excitement of Halloween, children may forget simple pedestrian safety rules.
• Drive slowly in residential areas where children are more likely to be trick-or-treating. Reduce your speed and stay alert.
• Slow down and proceed with caution when entering and exiting driveways or backing up.

• Keep your home and doorway well lit.
• Clear sidewalks and pathways for safety.
• Avoid using open flames in any displays.

Here are some general safety tips for everyone to consider:

•         Try to trick-or-treat when it is still light outside.
•         Wear a bright, reflective costume made of flame-resistant material.
•         Carry a flashlight, and use glow sticks, or reflective tape as part of your costume. Encourage children to stay away from open flames.
•         Ensure children know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire.
•         Why not use make-up instead of a mask? Masks can shift and obscure vision.
•         To prevent falls, ensure costumes fit well and aren’t too long and don’t have too much loose material.
•         Have a responsible adult go trick-or-treating with you.
•         If someone older cannot go with you, trick-or-treat as a group.
•         Plan your trick-or-treat route ahead of time. Pick well-lit streets.
•         Stay on sidewalks, look left, right and left again to be sure no cars are approaching before crossing the street. Always cross the street at corners and crosswalks; never cross between parked cars or in the middle of the block.
•         If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
•         Never enter the home of a stranger.
•         Discuss with your children the route they will be travelling and what time they are required to return home.
•         Only eat treats that have been examined by your parents.
•          Choking occurs most frequently among children under two years of age, but can happen at any age. Eating while playing, running, jumping, or talking increases the likelihood of choking.
•         ATTENTION DRIVERS! Children will be very excited and their actions could be sudden and unpredictable. Exercise caution and Just Slow Down.

Your home for Halloween:

•        Make sure your home is well lit, your yard clear and safe, and pets are secured so no harm comes to them or the children.
•          Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
•          It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candles in a Jack-o-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Make sure children are supervised when candles are lit.
•          Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.
•          Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.
•          Children should not use knives or other sharp instruments to carve pumpkins.

10. Early Burn at the V8 Supercar Perth Barbagallo Raceway


At the start of the race, Karl Reindler’s vehicle was hit at the back by Steve Owen’s Commodore, which ended up the car to burst in flames a little too early. Talk about a blazing start!


9. The Big Pileup at the Grand Prix Electrique 2011


Racing electronic cars in smaller streets can be quite dangerous, especially when there is no traction sound and the air is silent. The Grand Prix Electrique 2011 was one event where six cars piled up because of one wheel that took an uncontrollable turn.


8. Double Crash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

We have to admit that being behind the wheel for over 24 hours is no easy deal, especially when you are in the race against other competitors. The 2011 Le Mans in June had two heavy separate crashes where Allan McNish failed his race in less than an hour while trying to pass against a Ferrari. Another incident occurred with Mike Rockenfeller also crashing with a Ferrari at a staggering speed of 321km/h. Good thing both drivers survived the horror.


7. Injury at the Ronde de Andorra Rally


Robert Kubica, driver of the Lotus Renault GP, has lost control when he drove his Skoda Fabia car at the beginning event of the rally. The car went off the road at high speed, thus making him crash and hurt his right hand badly. Though it may be the case, his driver partner, Jakub Gerber was totally unharmed in the said accident.


6. The American Memorial 500 ends in a Gruesome Accident


Alex Zanardi, two-time CART champion, has joined the race in the American Memorial 500. The accident occurred very fast, even just being out fresh from the pit. His acceleration went too fast; his car became uncontrollable, and ended up barreled by another racer. It was not a crash that he caused but he was the major casualty, even losing both legs in the process.


5. Died in the Olympus Rally Crash with a Tough Turn

Matthew Marker is known in the racing community as a very friendly, generous, and lovable driver, even among his fellow competitors. Despite of his sweet nature, his life ended early at the age of 31 when he took his race in the Olympus Rally, during his fifth year career as a participant of the Rally America National Championship. His death occurred while he was making a tough turn on a downhill, his car sliding towards a tree, banging the driver’s side on the trunk.


4. Malaysian MotoGP Crash Results to a Kill

Marco Simoncelli was killed in a crash that occurred in as early as the second lap of the Malaysian MotoGP in the Sepang Circuit. His Honda bike swerved where he fell down and he was hit by Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi, which made Simoncelli lay motionless on the tracks, with his helmet off him. He was administered quickly by emergency staff, but that did not save him.


3. Copa Chevrolet Montana and the Brain Dead Driver

Brazilian stock car driver Gustavo Sondermann has died after a crash in Interlagos, while racing for the Copa Chevrolet Montana, April 3. His crash may not have been fatal as he was coming straight into the pit. However, following his lead, there was another driver that hit Sondermann, thus making him suffer heavy head injuries and was confirmed brain dead when he was treated in the nearby hospital.


2. Death in the National Superstock 600

At 18 years old, Ben Gautrey has so much life in front of him, being a Superbike racing star. However, his bike went out of control when he fell on the right hand of the road and down the mountain section. He fell off and he was even hit by two other riders by mistake, bringing out a casualty of five. Gautrey sustained head and chest injuries in the process, making him die at the last minute.


1. 15-Car Crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway

What can be more fatal than seeing a driver killed and including injuries of 15 other drivers in the process? This is what actually happened when Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died in a hard crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Even though he was airlifted from the track to University Medical Center to save his life, IndyCar had lost a person and a driver who is considered as a friend and a charmer.
